13-Day Namibia Desert & Dune Photographic Safari

This 13-day safari has been specifically designed for any keen photographer, whether a professional or an amateur. Desert and dune formations are superb for photography. This itinerary includes a wide range from huge barchan and star dunes to open gravel plains, hills, desert-adapted flora and flora, coastal areas, as well as some desert living people. All accommodation is in comfortable hotels and lodges.



DAY 1 Windhoek
Travel from Windhoek towards the Namib Desert to overnight the first night at a lodge in the Nauchas area, close to the Spreetshoogte Pass

Accommodation: lodge in the Nauchas area
Meals: dinner

DAY 2, 3 & 4 Namib Naukluft Park/Sossusvlei
Travel south through desert shrub savannah to the Namib, the route going via the beautiful Spreetshoogte pass. Two full days are set aside to spend in the area with early morning visits to the amazing Sossusvlei dune area, Dead Pan, Dune 45 as well as the Sesriem Gorge and Elim Dune. This is a fantastic area for dune and scenic photography.

Accommodation: Camp at the Sesriem campsite in the Namib Naukluft Park

DAY 5 & 6 Swakopmund/Walvis Bay
From here, head northwest via Solitaire and the amazing Kuiseb Canyon Rock formations to Swakopmund, situated on the Skeleton Coast. Visit areas and sites such as the Welwitschia Plains, Moonlandscape, Walvis Bay lagoon (flamingos, pelicans, wide variety of waders and other coastal birds) as well as some more dune areas.

Accommodation: Two nights at a hotel in Swakopmund

DAY 7 & 8 Cape Cross/Damaraland/Twyfelfontein
From Swakopmund, head north along the Skeleton Coast to Cape Cross to see and photograph the cape fur seals (80000-100000). From here inland to Damaraland where the scenery changes from wide-open plains to granite hills, valleys and dry river beds.
A full day (two nights) is spent on photography where interests will include desert and semi-desert scenery, rock engravings, bushman rock art, rock formations at Organ Pipes as well as a possibility of seeing the desert adapted elephants that have made the dry riverbeds their home.

DAY 9, 10 & 11 Palmwag/Rhino Tracking/Himba tribes
This area is also superb for photographers! A full day is set aside to spend in the Palmwag concession, beautiful landscapes as well as animals such as springbok, giraffe, oryx, mountain zebra as well as desert elephants can be found in the concession. Another full day will be spent in Sesfontein to visit
and photograph local traditional Himba, Herero and Damara villages.

of the Save The Rhino trust tracking the endangered
black rhino!

Accommodation: Palmwag Lodge campsite
Meals: all meals

DAY 12 Mount Etjo
Travel south to the Erongo Mountains, and then on
to Mount Etjo Safari Lodge for the last evening

DAY 13 End of Photographic Safari
After breakfast, travel back to Windhoek and transfer to the airport where the safari will end.
